Setting up your required permissions and settings
When you create a Tile account, our app will guide you through the process of correctly setting up your device’s permission settings to use Tile optimally.
An in-app banner notification will appear if one of the permission settings is not enabled or set- up incorrectly.
Notification Banner
Tile makes it easy to enable necessary settings or permissions if they are not set up properly.
- Open the Tile App.
- Select Enable in the notification banner to turn on the required settings or permissions.
Note: If you previously hit the X button and the banner notification disappeared, force close the Tile app from the recent apps page and relaunch it to view the notification message again.
Banner shows “Turn On Bluetooth” but Bluetooth is Already Turned On iOS device
The notification banner in the Tile app is advising you to “Turn Bluetooth On” but your iOS device’s settings already shows that Bluetooth is Toggled On. You need to turn Bluetooth On from the Control Panel, for instructions visit the Apple Support page.
Permissions and Settings on your iOS device
All iOS settings for the Tile app can be found in your device’s Settings.
- Go to your device’s Settings.
- Scroll down to and tap on the Tile app.
- Under Allow Tile To Access, enable or turn on the following:
- Bluetooth is toggled On.
- Notifications are toggled On.

Location is On and set to Always.
- Location (if grayed out)
- Go back to Settings.
- Tap Privacy.
- Tap Location and Toggle On.
- Location (if grayed out)
- Background App Refresh is toggled On.
- Background App Refresh (if grayed out)
- Go back to Settings.
- Tap General.
- Select Background app refresh.
- If Background App Refresh is toggled Off, tap and select Wi-Fi & Cellular Data.
- Tap on Back (< sign) to return to the previous page.
- Scroll down to the Tile app and toggle to On.

Note: If Low Power Mode is turned On, background app refresh is disabled. You will not be able to change it even if it is grayed out. Disable Low Power Mode:
- Go to your device’s Settings.
- Tap on Battery.
- Toggle Low Power Mode to Off.
- Background App Refresh (if grayed out)
- Motion & Fitness: Set to On if using Smart Alerts.
- Camera turned On. Necessary to use Scan And Secure or change your Tile’s photo.
- Focus modes: If you have not previously set up a Focus mode, you do not need to do anything.
- If you did set up a Focus mode, you will want to check your device’s Focus mode settings to add an exception for the Tile app or you could miss notifications. For more info on Focus mode, we would refer you to Apple’s support page.
You can also view these settings through the Tile app.
- Tap on Settings in the upper right corner.
- Scroll down to and select Permissions Status.
- You'll see a green checkmark next to each permission setting if it is set up correctly.
- If a permission setting has a Warning icon (exclamation point inside a triangle), Tap on the Warning icon. This action will take you to the setting so you can set it up correctly.
Permissions and Settings on your Android device
Android device settings differ depending on the Android version and manufacturer. Ensure the following settings are enabled.
- Go to your device’s Settings.
- Tap on Apps.
- Scroll down and tap on the Tile app.
- In the App info page, set the following to Allowed and toggled On:
- Bluetooth
- Location
- Notifications
- Nearby device
- Camera (Necessary to use Scan And Secure or change your Tile’s photo)
- Files and media (Necessary if you want to change or upload an existing picture).
- Mobile Data set to Allow background data usage. (If this is turned off, you will not get location updates when you are away from a WiFi connection).
- Battery Use set to Unrestricted.
Note:
- The easiest way to fix your permissions and settings on Android if you have one is to uninstall and reinstall the Tile app. The Tile app installation guide will assist you in granting all permissions and settings necessary.
- Google Play services must be enabled on Android devices. Certain phones like Huawei (P40 and above) and certain Honor devices are not supported.
- Devices that need to sideload or use a third-party app store (Fire HD, Chrome OS, etc) are also not supported. Tile Device Compatibility outlines what devices are supported.
“Pause App Activity if Unused” (For Android)
The “Pause App Activity if Unused” defaults to toggled On. If you don’t use the Tile app for 90 days, it will go into hibernation, and all its features and functions will not work.
To disable:
- Go to Settings.
- Tap on Apps.
- Scroll down and tap on the Tile app.
- Tap on Permissions.
- Toggle “Pause app activity if unused” to Off.
Note: Battery set to unrestricted does not have any effect.
Tile's Privacy Policy
To help ensure you can find items when they are lost, the Tile app will collect location data even when the app is closed or not in use. Tile won’t sell this data or use it for advertising purposes. See our Security and Privacy Policy and full Privacy Policy.
